Live/Work Backyard Apartment

Live/Work Backyard Apartment

Atlanta, GA

Located in the Kirkwood neighborhood in Atlanta, the project sought to create a prototype garage apartment that married the existing ecology of the site with an urban single-family homeowner’s needs. The structure incorporates a one-car garage with an apartment above. The apartment is expanded onto the ground level as well, as the structure includes a small office and workspace at grade. This workspace allows for the apartment to offer a live/work arrangement for a potential tenant, while also accommodating sheltered parking and storage for the property. The structure leverages preserves the existing natural ecology of the site, including a large, 30” oak tree in the center of the property. The second floor balcony cantilevers out so as not to create any tree disturbing elements at the ground plane, and it connects to the living room to bring the entire apartment into the natural flow of the site.
