Preservation is the core value of the community. There is an intention to preserve the culture of the neighborhood and develop strategies for sustainable growth. Diversity in resources, housing types, and programs will contribute to an interconnected network. Providing equitable access to the network and focusing on these three components will help the community thrive.

As with many low-income, black neighborhoods, the planning of this community disregarded its potential to flood. The site exists at an important nexus where a flood-prone site intersects with an urban node in the community. For this project, we combined ecological preservation with an intergenerational housing strategy, creating an aging-in-place community that grows within the natural ecology. Storm water drives the orientation of the project, providing views to nature from the units, flood mitigation for the neighborhood, and educational opportunities. A childcare space provides an intergenerational resource, and doubles as an gathering space for ecological education.
